Not totally related but Hulk smash docos a bit, and I just wanted to thank Hulk for RT of Kossakovsky’s tenets. (I believe Hulk RT’d his friend’s feed; I cannot find either.) I am not familiar with the filmmaker or his work, but his approach seems admirable.
As a (critical) lover of documentaries, it frustrates me no end how frequently fellow film-goers recommend a documentary which turns out to be yet another hagiography/demonization. Invariably, fans describe it as “impartial” or “unbiased” (or “unbias”…ugh) because in the documentary world these concepts are reduced to mere compliments much as “intelligent” or “profound” in the world of narrative film. Not to say that documentaries hold any particular onus of impartiality–it’s rather impossible (desirable and aspirational but nigh impossible)–but it’s alarming how many of us regard them as such.
I cannot say whether Kossakovsky achieves his goals, but many documentarians and certainly we the viewers would benefit to keep them in mind.
