1. I don’t know if it’s human nature or just something we learned in high school, but we always need someone or something to be at the bottom. Hatred for shows we don’t watch or just aren’t for our demographic is just our way of establishing this hierarchy of… I don’t know, coolness I guess. A sort of self-fulfilling validation of what we like by saying everything we don’t like is somehow lesser in value.

   P.S.

   I think the brony movement was genuinely self-aware at one point early on but they’ve basically become a sort of support/enabler group that’s lost a lot of that ‘Haha, we’re guys who like a show for girls,’ perspective. Whenever the weird ick factor is called out there’s a lot of ‘Don’t lump us in with THOSE bronies,’ reaction. I noticed a lot of that happening in the Badass comments.

2. The thing is, New Girl is just flat out hilarious. The writing is inspired and the chemistry between the main characters is spot on.

   Sure, it has a quirkiness to it that some people might find off-putting, but it works and feels very natural.

   The best way to demonstrate this is to watch an episode of the similar (in that they both star a woman) comedy, Happy Endings. This I find to be utterly insufferable. The writing is flat and the characters have no chemistry, whilst it seems it’s quirkiness and plotlines are the most horrendously contrived and souless experiences it is possible to have on TV.

   It is also worth mentioning that I was very unsure about New Girl. I had seen an episode and it’s tweeness seemed obscene, but once put into context it works perfectly.

   By contrast I had high hopes for Happy Endings (coming off the back of New Girl) and it was vomit inducingly bad.
