One thing that kind of bugs me about some of the commentary about this episode is that a lot of people are suggesting that Don let Megan into the commercial because he was offended by her mother\’s take on her abilities. But I think it was less a matter of being offended for her as it was a matter of Don protecting his privileged worldview, which is the pretense that anyone can start over and be anything. Megan\’s mother says that not everyone can be what they want to be, which is just true, but that\’s a challenge to who Don is and how he sees the world. It\’s what he tried to sell to Lane, and his inability to see that Lane was constrained in a way he hasn\’t been tells you something about what a limited perspective Don has.
